An Interesting function took place in the Upland village of Barr on Friday afternoon,
When Dr Hew Morrison,Edinburgh, representing Dr Andrew Carnegie,Opened,in the
presence of a large and representative gathering, the handsome new village institute
which has been erected on a commanding site in the village. For many years the
want of such a place has been keenly felt, and with a view of supplying the want the
Rev.John Angus,BD minister of the United Free church, has spent a considerable
amount of time in formulating a Scheme whereby the villagers could have the benefits
of such an institution at a minimum of cost.As a result of the efforts of Mr Angus and
the kindness of Dr Andrew Carnegie, who gave £500,and of Mr William Morton,of
Ardmillan,Mr Angus’ aim has been realised.
The building has been erected on ground secured on reasonable terms from the
Marquis of Ailsa, and has been built from plans drawn by Mr John Arthur,Architect,
Glasgow. The building consists of a hall or lecture room with accommodation for 200
